Microsoft has banned over a half million Xbox owners around the world from their Xbox live online gaming network. The punishment is meted out to owners who Microsoft detects as having modified their Xbox (or who have purchased a modded Xbox, whether or not they know it).
Microsoft has released the following statement:
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live,"
Can we infer from this that Microsoft considers backup copies of legally purchased games to be "pirated"?
